Trying to Getting Used to the Silence

Thanks to everyone for your kind comments. It's been pretty tough to get used to not having him around. Like I mentioned before, Finnegan was very demanding of your attention and he let you know it if he didn't think he was getting enough. Sure it was annoying sometimes (like when we were trying to sleep - or when your arms and shoulders were too sore from carrying him around all day) but now that he's not here, everything is so quiet. Tilley is not a cuddly, affectionate cat and I miss getting those kitty snuggles and headbutts (he loved being kissed on the forehead). Finnegan was pretty much everything I wanted in a cat (minus the near constant meowing). I wanted a cat that would sit on my lap and want to be cuddled and snuggled when I wanted to and not just when they were feeling like it - it was a pretty rare day when Finnegan wasn't up for a good snuggle.
I'm having a bit of a hard time with just Tilley because she isn't cuddly and affectionate - she was the reason I got Finnegan in the first place...

Anyway... It's all about adjusting to how things are now and we're trying our best to look back at all the funny any annoying things Finnegan did and laugh (instead of cry which has been a pretty common occurrance lately). The one that got us laughing the hardest the other day (and my mum later when I told her) was the rivalry Finnegan had with Glen. Finnegan knew that he was here before Glen and took every chance he could to show how absolutely jealous he was anytime Glen and I were near eachother (ie: if we were sitting together on the couch or even worse if we were laying on the bed). Finnegan would physically get between us but the worst (and funniest) thing of all was that any time Finnegan had to jump up where we were or walk past Glen he ALWAYS (and I really mean always) stepped or jumped on Glen's crotch. Every.Single.Time. Any time Finnegan would go near Glen, Glen would be covering himself to avoid the inevitable.

I'm going in for a massage at 6 tonight and hopefully that will help me feel a bit better physically. Besides the stress at work (which, honestly has been pretty minimal - there's usually a once weekly occurrance of ridiculousness but it's usually been resolved in a few days) the Finnegan thing has really messed my body up (oh, I have a cold on top of it all too - great!). After my scope and getting my new stomach meds, things were going pretty good and now... Yikes... Things are worse than they were before the scope... I'm not getting too worried (though my doctor will probably freak the fuck out tomorrow if I tell him) because I'm pretty confident that it's the stress causing it and if I give it a few more weeks, things will be back to normal. Waiting out the symptoms is the toughest part.

We're getting our new hockey jersys tonight too. I'll try to post a picture soon wearing it. (I'm looking forward to hockey tonight - good stress reliever!).

Thanks again for all the comments.

In Which I Throw My Knitting Across the Room... And Then My Brain Explodes....

A few weeks ago a co-worker (whom I greatly dislike) told me she had a pattern book for some hats and was wondering if I could knit her one. I told her to bring the book and I'd see what I could do. So she brought over the Paton's booklet "Where Did You Get That Hat!" (which I happen to own anyway). She picked out TWO hats the red beret on the front and the main cover image. I basically told her that I'd only knit one and I was only going to knit the red one. I ended up making it in black because I don't have any red yarn that was suitable...

This hat has been one pain in the arse after another!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I told the co-worker that I'd be able to knit her hat after the craft fair but I managed to find some spare time before-hand and got 90% of it done by then. On the last day of the craft fair (2 minutes before we're supposed to pack up) she comes by with a ball of yarn (a lady at the CF was selling her home-spun) and asked me how much of it I'd need to knit her hat. So I told her that I'd already started. THEN she decides that I should knit her TWO hats of doom! I leveled with her and told her I HATED knitting the Hat of Doom and there would be NO WAY I'd make another... Her reply? "Maybe I'll twist your arm and get you to make me another" - aksdflkajs!!!
She walked away and I thought that was the end of it... NO! She came back and starts talking to me about the Hat of Doom and I had to try to explain to her that knitting something you hate takes ALL the fun out of it (combined with hating the person makes for a pretty miserable experience).
The Hat of Doom is a shitty hat to knit and I disliked every.single.stitch.... Dislikeing something in such a way doesn't really lend itself to making you want to mass produce them! You know what she finally said to me? "Oh, I get it, you hate knitting hats" *cough* She totally didn't get that I didn't like knitting this SPECIFIC hat. My reply? "Yes, you're right. I hate knitting hats."

Busy!!

Busy, busy, busy!!!

Wow, the last month went by so fast! I've hardly had time to do anything between getting us ready for Christmas and getting everyone at work ready (a lot of planning goes into ordering, wrapping, baking, planning etc etc for 5 people). Things went well this year despite the fact that I was running out of time to get things done and didn't manage to get everything done that I wanted to (it was mostly the baking that got cut in the end - I made over 400 various kinds of cookies for work since I was putting together boxes to hand out to a few local places - long term care, resident's families etc. So because of that I didn't get any baking done for here and didn't manage to get any bread or buns done either - I realised at like 10:00pm Sunday night that I'd completely forgot to make buns for at work and then was way too lazy to make some for our dinner - oh well!). I was extra busy but this is the first year that wasn't full of stress and things getting all messed up. At work we order all our presents through Sears and this is the first year that everything made it on time - even the stuff they said wouldn't be here until January made it by the 23rd!
One of the resident's mums is visiting for the holidays and it's been a lot of fun having her around (I'm pretty close with the family). She originally came here for medical but extended her stay for Christmas. Because of her medical condition she has a very hard time getting around so I've been taking her out and helping her with her errands and stuff. Luckily she's a very small woman so when we go out, Glen and I just pick her up and put her in our truck (well, our landlord's truck that we're using while they're away) and then put her in her wheelchair to get her around. Most of my evenings at work have been spent chatting with her and asking questions about how life used to be up here (she's not even 50 yet and was born out on the land). It's so fascinating to hear about that sort of stuff - especially to hear about her first experiences with "southern" culture (one of her first non-northern foods was a mandarin orange and she says she can still remember how sweet it was). I made her a pair of mittens while she's been here since her usual rabbit fur mitts are a bit too bulky for trying to get in and out of vehicles. I only have a picture of one of them but I'm going to try to get a picture of her wearing them.

In other news, only 5 or 6 more days until the sun comes back - yay! The "sunrise" each morning has been getting better and better - pinks, purples, oranges. The 50th anniversary of Inuvik is this year so apparently the budget for the annual bringing back the sun fireworks has more than doubled. Should be exciting!

On the knitting front - I still haven't finished my knitted nativity (I haven't worked on it much in the last few weeks) It'll be finished before next year but it might take a while... I have a few other "urgent" things I need to get done first. I'm almost finished a super secret Secret Pal present. I've never knit anything for a Secret Pal before so I'm both nervous and excited I can't wait to post about it though.

I was going to post pictures but that will have to wait until another day... Glen is trying to watch the cricket on the other computer and uploading is messing that up.
